EMERGENCY RESIDENCY PROGRAM FOR UKRAINIAN LITERARY CREATORS IN BELGRADE, SERBIA

Association KROKODIL is launching a call for applications for literary residencies. The duration is from 1 to 8 months ranging from October 2022 to June 2023. The open call addresses Ukrainian literary creators. These include prose writers, poets, essayists, translators, editors, cultural journalists, comic book authors, theoreticians, columnists, singer-songwriters, rappers, spoken word performers, etc.

The program is intended for literary creators from Ukraine as well as those who are already in exile.

Beginning in October, residency recipients will be based at the KROKODIL Residence for Writers. They will also be able, should they wish so, to participate fully in the life of the KROKODIL Center for Contemporary Literature. They will benefit from a monthly grant (depending on the status of the applicant – whether they are coming with the family or not), a housing and travel allowance, an individual workspace, and administrative and overall support.

Those interested in applying should send us a short email with the desired duration of the stay and whether they are coming with members of their immediate family or alone, . Applications written in Ukrainian or English should be sent by email at office@krokodil.rs.

Candidates will be selected by a commission formed by writers, cultural workers, and translators from Ukraine and the region of former Yugoslavia.  The application deadline for the first stage of the program (beginning in October 2022) is September 15th and successful applicants will be notified shortly afterward.

More about the Project

KROKODIL’s Writer-in-residence program has been active ever since 2012 as the only continuous residential program for writers in Serbia. It has in the meantime hosted more than 110 writers from 20 countries. However, to be able to offer this space to literary creators and cultural workers from Ukraine the decision was reached to freeze all usual activities of this ongoing program and to secure it as a haven for the creative individuals in jeopardy from this war-torn country. Depending on the situation, we can either offer two six-month residential periods to two individuals together with the members of their nuclear families or several shorter residential periods to a larger number of participants, either solo or accompanied by their families. Travel expenses, rent with monthly living expenses as well as a grant allocated monthly will be provided to meet the basic needs of these individuals and/or families. The call will be published in August 2022 and the residential period will start in October 2022. The Independent Commission will select participants based on the analysis of the received application forms.

Besides the residence for writers, the space in KROKODIL’s Center for Contemporary Literature will also be provided together with numerous activities (primarily depending on the wish of the particular residing writer) regarding the professional needs of the exiled writers.

Association KROKODIL, as an independent organization from Belgrade with literary, artistic, and socio-political activities has decided to provide shelter and support to Ukrainian literary creators on top of other activities related to Ukraine such as collecting humanitarian help for the City Perinatal center in Kharkiv, etc. Being that a large number of Ukrainian writers have been offered similar programs in many European countries, we decided to open the doors of our residence for writers to all literary creators (including, prose writers and poets, also essayists, translators, editors, cultural journalists, comic book authors, theoreticians, columnists, singer-songwriters, rappers, spoken word performers, etc.).

НАДЗВИЧАЙНА ПРОГРАМА РЕЗИДЕНЦІЙ ДЛЯ УКРАЇНСЬКИХ УЧАСНИКІВ ЛІТЕРАТУРНОГО ПРОЦЕСУ В БЕЛГРАДІ (СЕРБІЯ)

Асоціація KROKODIL оголошує прийом заявок на літературну резиденцію тривалістю від 1 до 8 місяців від жовтня 2022 до червня 2023 року. Заявки приймаються від українських учасників літературного процесу – поетів, прозаїків, есеїстів, перекладачів, редакторів, культурних журналістів, коміксистів, літературознавців, колумністів, авторів-виконавців пісень, реперів, усних оповідачів тощо.

Програма призначена для учасників літературного процесу з України, а також для тих, які перебувають поза її межами.

Від жовтня 2022 року учасники резиденції мешкатимуть на Письменницькій резиденції KROKODIL (KROKODIL Residence for Writers) і, за бажання, зможуть повноцінно долучитися до життя Центру сучасної літератури KROKODIL (KROKODIL Center for Contemporary Literature). Учасникам гарантовані щомісячна стипендія (розмір якої залежатиме від того, приїдуть вони самі чи з сім’єю), покриття видатків на дорогу та проживання, окреме робоче місце, адміністративна й загальна підтримка.

Зацікавлених просимо надіслати короткий мейл (українською або англійською мовою), вказавши бажану тривалість перебування на резиденції та інформацію про те, чи збираються вони приїхати з членами найближчої родини, чи самі. Заявки просимо надсилати на адресу:  office@krokodil.rs

Переможців обиратиме комісія, до складу якої входять культурні діячі та перекладачі з України та регіону колишньої Югославії. Термін подання заявок на першу фазу проєкту (яка починається у жовтні 2022 року) – 15 вересня, а невдовзі по тому переможці будуть поінформовані про результати відбору.

Програма письменницьких резиденцій KROKODIL єдина в Сербії безперервно діє з 2012 року. За цей час резиденція прийняла понад 110 авторів із 20 країн. Однак щоб надати простір українським літераторам і працівникам культури, ми ухвалили рішення призупинити основну програму і створити натомість безпечну гавань для загрожених письменників з охопленої війною України. З огляду на ситуацію, що склалася, ми можемо запропонувати дві піврічні резиденції для двох авторів із членами їхніх сімей або прийняти більшу кількість авторів, самих чи з сім’ями, на коротший термін перебування. Програма передбачає покриття видатків на проживання й дорогу та щомісячну стипендію для забезпечення базових потреб самих авторів і/або членів їхніх сімей. Прийом заявок розпочнеться в серпні, загальний період резиденцій – у жовтні 2022 року. Учасників резиденції, на основі аналізу їхніх заявок, відбиратиме незалежна комісія.

Окрім письменницької резиденції, Центр сучасної літератури KROKODIL організовуватиме, згідно з побажаннями гостьових авторів, різноманітні заходи, відповідні професійним потребам письменників в екзилі.

Асоціація KROKODIL як незалежна белградська організація, що здійснює літературну, мистецьку та соціально-політичну діяльність, прийняла рішення надати притулок і підтримку українським літераторам, на додачу до інших пов’язаних з Україною заходів – таких як, скажімо, збір гуманітарної допомоги для Харківського міського перинатального центру. Оскільки безліч українських авторів уже дістали запрошення на подібні програми в багатьох європейських країнах, ми вирішили відкрити двері нашої письменницької резиденції для всіх учасників літературного процесу – окрім поетів та прозаїків, ще й есеїстів, перекладачів, редакторів, культурних журналістів, коміксистів, літературознавців, колумністів, авторів-виконавців пісень, реперів, усних оповідачів тощо.
